During an inspection visit of the Approved Waste Dump sites along Ibusa Road in the Asaba Capital Territory, as well as in Agbor, it was observed that a lot of scavengers were on site to pick up recyclable waste bringing to the fore the urgent need to implement recycling initiatives in the State.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Asaba Dr. (Mrs.) Minnie Oseji in the company of the Mrs. Irene Uduaghan, a staff of the Department of Sanitation and Waste Management made this observation in addition to identifying numerous illegal waste dumps in Agbor and its environs. Plans are underway for evacuation of the illegal dump sites as well as sensitisation to prevent recurrence.
Furthermore, efforts to rid the State of indiscriminately disposed waste with the resultant negative effects on the lives of Deltans are being embarked upon by the Ministry through a series of cleaning activities in different parts of the State. Some of the areas cleaned included Ezenei Avenue which has been littered with waste and weeds in the median kerbs.
Desilting of one arm of the drain at DBS Road by Summit Road junction of PET bottles as well as the drainage system along Isiaye street off Infant Jesus Road, Asaba was carried out with the excavation and evacuation of resultant debris using Tipper lorries. This would contribute to reducing the risk of flooding when the rains become heavier as predicted.
